3 feel-good movies new on Prime Video to chase away the Sunday scaries

As the weekend winds down and the dread of Monday morning starts creeping in once more, finding ways to shake off the Sunday scaries has turned into a cornerstone of my weekly routine. Thankfully, Prime Video added a ton of new movies in October, including some uplifting, laugh-out-loud films perfect for a cozy Sunday evening reset.

Whether you are looking for an inspiring true story, a heartwarming road-trip comedy, or a fun movie night with friends and plenty of laughs, these three feel-good titles — “The Boys in the Boat,” “Dog,” and “Girls’ Trip” — are guaranteed to help you relax, recharge, and start your week on the right foot.

Still not convinced? Here’s why these feel-good movies new on Prime Video deserve a spot on your watchlist.

‘The Boys in the Boat’ (2023)

The vibe: The kinda underdog sports drama you rarely see these days

George Clooney steps into the director’s chair for “The Boys in the Boat,” a somewhat plodding biographical sports drama that’s perfect for a hit of nostalgia this Sunday afternoon. Set during the Great Depression, it tells the inspirational true story of the University of Washington men’s rowing team as they compete for gold at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

Whipping this fresh meat into shape is coach Al Ulbrickson Sr. (Joel Edgerton). The team goes on to beat some of the most prestigious programs in the U.S. before making it to the Olympics. Callum Turner of “Fantastic Beasts” fame stars as Joe Rantz, a young man who sees rowing as his last shot to escape his troubled circumstances. While it’s a fairly by-the-numbers biopic, audiences ate it up: “The Boys in the Boat” holds an impressive 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

    ‘Dog’ (2022)

DOG | Official Trailer | MGM Studios – YouTube DOG | Official Trailer | MGM Studios - YouTube

    Watch On

The vibe: A laid-back road trip with your ride or die

Turns out man’s best friend can get PTSD too. Channing Tatum stars and co-directs with “Magic Mike” writer Reid Carolin in “Dog,” a heartfelt buddy comedy that wraps up with a surprisingly powerful message. Channing proves exactly why audiences can’t get enough of him as the charming Briggs, an ex-soldier stuck with driving his recently deceased army buddy’s angsty military dog, Lulu, from Washington to Arizona for her owner’s funeral.

Their road trip of a lifetime plays out like a classic romcom as the two warm up to each other after an icy first meeting. Along the way, they’re pulled off into one wild caper after another that forces Briggs to reconsider everything he believes. Cleverly, Tatum and Carolin use the road trip framework as a metaphor for how to heal America’s political divides, suggesting that the enemy’s bark may be worse than its bite.

    ‘Girls’ Trip’ (2017)

Girls Trip (2017) Official Trailer 1 (Universal Pictures) HD – YouTube Girls Trip (2017) Official Trailer 1 (Universal Pictures) HD - YouTube

    Watch On

The vibe: A hilarious dose of Black Girl Magic

Rarely do comedies crack a 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes, but “Girls Trip” managed a 91% critics score — which should tell you something about how well this ladies-on-the-loose comedy sticks the landing. That it came out in 2017, a year of emotional whiplash that marked just the beginning of neverending nightmare headline, helped tremendously to establish it as a cult classic.

Written by Kenya Barris (scriptwriter of comedy hit “Black-ish”) and Tracy Oliver, “Girls Trip” follows four lifelong friends who reunite for one wild weekend in New Orleans. Along the way, they realize that girl time was exactly what they needed to get their (messy af) lives back on track — and what better way to bond than in a “The Hangover” style misadventure. Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Queen Latifah, and Jada Pinkett Smith have a hilarious chemistry that make this the perfect watch to cackle over with friends.

Lookee here: We have a Sunday afternoon to kill. What a lovely problem to have. It’s too bad that with all the great new movies coming and going from the best streaming services, figuring out what to watch next can quickly turn into a headache.

If you are tired of endless scrolling and looking for a movie that is guaranteed to deliver, you’re in the right place. To help you kick that decision paralysis to the curb, I’ve rounded up seven critically acclaimed masterpieces — from pulse-pounding thrillers, to sweeping romances, haunting folk horror, and Academy Award-winning dramas —each with near-perfect scores of 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes.

Whether you are tuning in on Prime Video, Paramount+, Max, or Netflix to finish off your weekend with a bang, here are the best top-tier films to add to your streaming queue right now.

    ‘Parasite’ (Paramount+)

Who’s it for: Not billionaires; those who love a slow-burn drama
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 99%

Anytime I do these Rotten Tomatoes round-up and I have an opportunity to shout out Bong Joon-ho’s historic Best Picture winner, I take it. “Parasite” is an “eat the rich” tale that follows the destitute Kim family who catch a lucky break when one (Choi Woo-shik) lands a job tutoring the daughter of the wealthy but naive Park family.

His sister Ki-jung (Park So-dam) forges a university diploma to secure him the position. But once inside the lavish Park household, the Kims start plotting to sneak everyone onto the family’s payroll — only to discover they’re not the first desperate family to try this kind of scheme.

    ‘Moonlight’ (Prime Video)

    Watch On

Who’s it for: The alphabet mafia and fans of character-driven storytelling
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 98%

Another Best Picture winner, Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” is a breathtaking and deeply intimate portrait about what it means to be a Black gay man in America. Unfolding across three chapters of one man’s life, it follows Chiron (played by Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes in each respective stage) as he grows up in a rough neighborhood of Miami and later Atlanta.

As a kid, he’s abused and bullied; as a teen, he’s hazed and arrested; and once he’s grown, he’s left grappling with how those experiences shaped him. It’s a poetic masterpiece about toxic masculinity and sexuality with a knockout performance by Mahershala Ali as Chiron’s mentor.

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ (HBO Max)

ANATOMY OF A FALL – Official Trailer – YouTube ANATOMY OF A FALL - Official Trailer - YouTube

    Watch On

Who’s it for: If Cell Block Tango is your favorite song from “Chicago”
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 96%

“Anatomy of a Fall” is the kind of film where you quickly realize you’ve gotta choose whose word to trust. But really, who is telling the truth doesn’t matter as much as how their stories make you feel. Sandra Hüller leads an impeccable cast in the performance of a lifetime, an icy mother who makes her son promise “you must never lie to yourself” as she does her best to navigate living under the thumb of an angry man.

When his father, the equal parts conniving and charming Swann Arlaud, winds up dead, suspicion falls on her immediately. But the truth, as gradually comes to light through a grueling trial, is somehow even more tragic. It’s hard to explain why “Anatomy of a Fall” is so great without spoiling the steady drip of discovery at the heart of this film, so if I’m being annoyingly vague, it’s on purpose.

    ‘It Follows’ (Paramount+)

It Follows Official Trailer 1 (2015) – Horror Movie HD – YouTube It Follows Official Trailer 1 (2015) - Horror Movie HD - YouTube

    Watch On

Who’s it for: Horror fans and non-horror fans alike
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%

“It Follows” is easily the horror movie I recommend most to folks who don’t like horror movies. It leans heavy into suspense with precious few jump scares, and its wild hook snags your attention from the get-go. Maika Monroe stars as Jay, a young woman who finds herself cursed after a one-night stand. And I mean that literally. The conditions are simple and iron-clad: An entity that can look like anyone will hunt you down and kill you.

The only way to escape the curse is to have sex with someone else to pass that tragic fate onto a new target. As Jay and her friends race to find a way to break the curse without condemning someone else, paranoia sets in. Its slow-burn tension and ever-present sense that anyone could be a threat make “It Follows” the kind of movie that’ll have you hiding behind your hands and mean-mugging every background character gets a little too close.

Watch “It Follows” on Paramount+ now

‘Call Me By Your Name’ (Netflix)

Who’s it for: The hopeless romantics and those who don’t want summer to end
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%

Another nominee for Best Picture, “Call Me by Your Name” is the final sun-drenched chapter in director Luca Guadagnino’s “Desire” trilogy. Timothée Chalamet made a name for himself as 17-year-old Elio Perlman, a fumbling teen who runs headfirst into his sexual awakening over one fateful ’80s summer in northern Italy.

Sparks fly when he meets Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old graduate student of his father staying with them over the summer. When his stay inevitably ends, it brings all the heartbreak you’d expect. Nominated for four Academy Awards, the film is a sensual and tenderly honest celebration of first love and desire.

Watch “Call Me By Your Name” on Netflix now

    ‘Creed’ (Paramount+)

Creed – Official Trailer [HD] – YouTube Creed - Official Trailer [HD] - YouTube

    Watch On

Who’s it for: Anyone who loves a good underdog story (and/or Michael B. Jordan)
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%

If you only watch one movie this weekend, it’s gotta be Ryan Coogler’s “Creed” on Paramount+. Especially if you haven’t seen it — but even if you have, Coogler’s one of those directors with such an eye for detail it rewards rewatch. This spin-off of the “Rocky” series sees Sylvester Stallone reprise his iconic role as the underdog champ in a riveting sports drama that packs an emotional punch.

Long-time Coogler collaborator Michael B. Jordan stars as Adonis Johnson, the son of legendary heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who sets out to Philadelphia to get trained by his father’s old rival and friend, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). Between its raw emotional depth, seriously impressive fight choreography, and incredible lead chemistry, “Creed” is one of the only sports dramas I actually recommend.

    ‘The Witch’ (Prime Video)

The Witch | Official Trailer HD | A24 – YouTube The Witch | Official Trailer HD | A24 - YouTube

    Watch On

Who’s it for: The witchies, the girlies, and the goats
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 91%

Now if you are a horror movie fan and you haven’t seen “The Witch”: Where ya been, dude? Before Robert Eggers jump-scared audiences with mermaid Willem Dafoe in “The Lighthouse,” his directorial debut helmed by a young and haunting Anya Taylor-Joy haunted our nightmares with the best modern folk horror story since “The Blair Witch Project.”

Set in 17th-century New England, it centers on William (Ralph Ineson) and his family who put down roots on a remote farm in the forest after getting banished from their settlement. When their youngest son, Samuel, is nowhere to be found, all signs point to the eldest daughter, Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy), and her witchy business being behind it. Shut in by the winter’s cold and going mad with worry, William becomes convinced that something evil is lurking in the woods — and that Thomasin is to blame.

Liverpool vs Man City FREE streams: How to watch Premier League 2026/27 online from anywhere

Watch Liverpool vs Man City as Enzo Maresca’s side play their first game since the club were found guilty of serious Premier League financial rule breaches. The visitors will be expecting a hostile reception from Reds fans as a result, with the eyes of the football world on Anfield to see how City react.

The three-week international break was livened up by the news that City had been found guilty of the majority of charges for serious breaches of Premier League financial rules, following a long-running investigation. The club deny wrongdoing and have launched an appeal, but sympathy will be in short supply at Anfield when Enzo Maresca’s side resume their season. It has overshadowed an impressive start to the Italian’s first campaign in charge, in which City topped the Premier League heading into the break after winning all of their opening five games.

Liverpool have made a solid if unspectacular start to life under Andoni Iraola, with the former Bournemouth manager still unbeaten across all competitions. • See Keri Russell’s breakout performance in one of my favorite teen dramas of all time, now on Netflix

See Keri Russell’s breakout performance in one of my favorite teen dramas of all time, now on Netflix

(L to R) Scott Foley, Keri Russell and Scott Speedman in publicity art for Felicity
(Image credit: Touchstone Television / WB / PictureLux / The Hollywood Archive / Alamy Stock Photo)

Before leaving my dorm room when I graduated from college in 2002, I opened the top drawer of my desk, where past students had inscribed their names for posterity, and added my own mark. I wrote “Felicity Porter ’02.”

That’s the effect that the college graduation of a fictional character, just a few weeks before my own, had on my life. Felicity and I had spent the past four years going through many of the same college milestones — although I never ended up at the center of a love triangle — and I had just seen her write her own name on the wall of her closet at the University of New York.

Watching “Felicity” now elicits a different sort of nostalgia, nearly 25 years after my college graduation and the end of the series, but it’s still a beautifully crafted coming-of-age story, with excellent performances and well-drawn characters. As played by Keri Russell, Felicity herself is one of the best TV characters of the past 30 years, a charming, awkward, open-hearted and driven young woman who is also a fiercely loyal friend. I may not have actually gone to college with Felicity, but after four seasons of her show, I felt like I had.

Thanks to a recent deal with Disney, all four seasons of “Felicity” are now streaming on Netflix. While some of Felicity’s college experiences may seem quaint to modern viewers, the show’s story of growing up and figuring out who you are and what you want in life is universal, ready to be discovered by a new generation.

‘Felicity’ is a warm, empathetic character study

“Felicity” begins with the kind of ridiculous high concept that has fueled numerous romantic comedies: At her high school graduation, Felicity finally works up the nerve to approach Ben Covington (Scott Speedman), the popular guy she’s spent four years crushing on from afar. She asks him to sign her yearbook, just hoping for something like “Have a great summer!,” and he writes a heartfelt note saying that he always wished he’d gotten to know her better.

Based on that single flicker of interest, Felicity changes her entire college plans, ditching Stanford and the career trajectory planned by her parents to follow Ben to New York City.

That set-up could be the source for lots of cringe comedy, but creators J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves keep the show grounded and honest, and Felicity and Ben develop a sweet if often complicated relationship.

Sign up to the weekly Tom’s Streaming Guide to stay in the loop with the latest releases and top recommendations across your favorite streaming services. We’ve got you covered with a complete guide on what’s worth watching.

Throughout the show’s four seasons, Felicity bounces back and forth romantically between Ben and the geeky Noel Crane (Scott Foley), forming genuine bonds with both. Plenty of viewers were Team Ben or Team Noel, but I was always Team Felicity, hoping for her to make her own way in life regardless of which guy she was with, and that’s how the show was, too.

Ben and Noel aren’t just objects of Felicity’s affection, but well-rounded characters in their own rights, with their own ambitions and flaws. The same goes for Felicity’s friends, including musician Julie Emrick (Amy Jo Johnson), premed classmate Elena Tyler (Tangi Miller) and Wiccan roommate Meghan Rotundi (Amanda Foreman). Felicity’s love life may be the focus of the show, but as a person, she’s always there for her friends, and she feels as deeply for them as she does for any guy she’s dating.

‘Felicity’ is network TV at its best

Although Abrams and Reeves went on to bigger success in genre fare, “Felicity” finds its greatest strengths in the mundane, allowing viewers to get to know these characters over the course of lengthy seasons that don’t really exist in the streaming era. Felicity and her friends have time to make mistakes, meet new people, fall in love, break up and get back together again. There are moments when the show tips into melodrama, especially in a third-season storyline about a shooting at a Christmas party, but for the most part it sticks to simple, relatable emotions.

Some of the highlights include a first-season two-parter about a figure from Felicity’s past who does the same thing to her that she does to Ben, a second-season one-off episode shot in the black-and-white style of “The Twilight Zone,” and a strange final five-episode arc that sees Felicity going back in time to make a different choice between Ben and Noel. Even when exploring an alternate timeline, Felicity remains caring and conscientious, with an infectious smile and a generous spirit.

She’s the type of person you want to spend time with, and that’s just what the show offers. She was by my side throughout my college years, and she’s there now on Netflix, just as kind, funny and occasionally exasperating as ever.

3 new to Paramount+ thriller movies to watch this weekend — including one of the finest Best Picture Oscar winners ever

Paramount+ continues to spoil subscribers each month by stocking up its increasingly impressive library of flicks. As someone who loves getting his spine tingled by a good thriller, I’ve been sifting through the latest October additions to find genre picks worth your precious time.

This week, I’ve picked out one of the first movies that kick-started the McConaissance, a stylish thrill ride from the directors of “The Matrix”, and what I consider one of the best films to take home Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

This trio of recently added thriller movies on Paramount+ is well worth streaming this weekend. While I have you, my colleague Rory Mellon has compiled a companion article with the latest thrillers on Prime Video.

    ‘Killer Joe’ (2012)

A slept-on entry in the “McConaissance” era, “Killer Joe” is a deliciously dark thriller that sparks to life when an unhinged family tries to off their estranged matriarch for insurance money. With the Smiths desperate for cash after son Chris (Emile Hirsch) finds himself owing a small fortune to drug dealers, they turn to the worst possible guardian angel. Enter Joe Cooper (McConaughey): a corrupt cop who works as a hitman during his off hours.

A couple of years before he mesmerized the world with his turn in “True Detective” as Rust Cohle, Mr “Alright, Alright, Alright” showed he could play an equally charismatic, often chilling copper in one of the late William Friedkin’s final films. Twisted and brilliantly acted by the core cast, rewatching “Killer Joe” recently reminded me of just what a damn fine actress Juno Temple is. And I entirely blame you, “Ted Lasso” season 3, for forgetting that fact. If you want dark chills and twisted humor, you need to check out this dark comedy/thriller.

    ‘Parasite’ (2019)

The first non-English language movie to take home Best Picture at the Oscars, for my money, “Parasite” is the most deserving winner of that little golden statue over the past decade. An utterly brilliant dark comedy/thriller, director Bong Joon-ho’s opus is both an impeccable social satire on class inequality and a genuinely creepy thrill ride that provides both chills and giggles. In short, this modern South Korean classic is a bona fide masterpiece.

The premise of “Parasite” is a dark delight. The poverty-stricken Kim family are as scheming as they are starving. After son Ki Woo (Choi Woo-shik) weasels his way into an English tutoring gig for the wealthy Kim clan, it’s not long before the rest of his fam are also burrowing their way into the Kims’ lives. Cue the rest of Ki Woo’s bloodline landing cushy gigs as an art therapist, housekeeper and chauffeur. It’s Kim patriarch Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho) who steals the show, delivering many a laugh before a truly unsettling finale kicks in.

    ‘V for Vendetta’ (2005)

Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, “V for Vendetta” benefits from the Wachowskis’ sharp screenplay. Sure, it’s not on the level of “The Matrix”, and Moore refused a credit after accusing the film of watering down complex themes, but this dystopian thriller is still a mighty fun watch. With a near-future Britain under the rule of the oppressive Norsefire party, it’s up to a masked vigilante to stick it to the surveillance state and spark a London-wide uprising.

Touching on themes of anarchism and political upheaval, “V for Vendetta” has a lot to say… even if the script is a touch heavy-handed at times. Unlikely hero and rebellious journalist Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman) might be saddled with the worst English accent since Dick Van Dyke, yet that doesn’t really register when her co-star Hugo Weaving steals every scene he’s in. The former Agent Smith plays the titular V: a formidable crusader in a Guy Fawkes mask who’s part Zorro/part Terminator. With ultra-slick setpieces and handsome choreography, Paramount+ subscribers shouldn’t wait until November 5 to remember, remember this stylish thriller.

As it does at the start of every month, Netflix has just added a plethora of new movies and shows. The new on Netflix October 2026 slate contains some real gems, including two of my favorite ever films in the form of “Heat” and “Gladiator”. Seeing as I own both of those cinematic greats on 4K Blu-ray though, they’re not really making my streaming sense tingle. The flick that is getting me positively pumped? That would be “22 Jump Street”.

Look, I’m not going to try and claim that this 2014 sequel is on a par with “The Godfather Part 2” or “Aliens”. But honestly, it genuinely is one of my favorite ever follow-ups. Once again directed by “The Lego Movie” duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, this brilliant buddy cop comedy reunites undercover officers Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) after they successfully brought down a high school drug ring in “21 Jump Street”. This time out, their assignment is, you guessed it, to infiltrate a college.

Relentlessly ribbing itself for doing the same shtick all over again, “22 Jump Street” isn’t just self-aware; it’s also riotously funny. If you’re looking for some rib-tickling action on Netflix this week, I promise you won’t regret going undercover with these two bumbling cops turned unlikely best buds.

What is ‘22 Jump Street’ about?

After they just about aced their high school assignment, Schmidt and Jenko’s superior officers give the undercover duo the green light to infiltrate a college. Their mission? To find and stop the supplier of a dangerous new narcotic, called WHYPHY (Work Hard? Yes. Play Hard? Yes.).

Now playing brothers Brad and Doug McQuaid, our cops end up drifting apart as both fully embrace college life. Doug/Schmidt gets into impromptu poetry, while Brad/Jenko quickly becomes the best player on the football team. Can the squabbling pals put aside their differences, mend their friendship and bring down the dealers?

Well, yes… obviously. Still, that doesn’t make the journey towards a fantastic finale set on Miami Beach any less funny or engaging.

Why you should stream ‘22 Jump Street’ on Netflix

Like the original, “22 Jump Street” has no problem going meta. Whereas the first film had fun mining comedy gold out of sending up the fact it was a reboot of an ‘80s Johnny Depp show no one remembers, the follow-up loves reminding you that sequels normally suck every opportunity.

Sign up to the weekly Tom’s Streaming Guide to stay in the loop with the latest releases and top recommendations across your favorite streaming services. We’ve got you covered with a complete guide on what’s worth watching.

“No one gave a s**t about the Jump Street reboot when you came on,” Nick Offerman’s Chief Hardy drolly tells Schmidt and Jenko at the beginning of the movie. “Anyone with half a brain, myself included, thought it was destined to fail spectacularly. But you got lucky. And now this department has invested a lot of money to make sure Jump Street keeps going.” Cue a reel of gags that focus on just how much cash the producers threw at “22 Jump Street”.

Now that the undercover program has become a success following the high school caper, Schmidt and Jenko are no longer being given their orders in a Korean church. Instead, Jump Street now operates out of a high-tech office, with their boss Captain Dickson (Ice Cube) working out of a glass structure that just so happens to resemble a block of Ice. See what they did there?

There are so many standout scenes in “22 Jump Street”. The opening drug bust where Schmidt gets attacked by an octopus. “It’s inking into my mouth!” The duo undergoing decidedly different trips after accidentally eating WHYPHY-infused brownies. Jonah Hill and Jillian Bell getting into one of the most awkward fight scenes in movie history. There’s barely time to catch your breath over the breezy 112-minute runtime.

It’s no wonder “22 Jump Street” was such a success. Despite being made on a relatively small budget, it took home well over $300m at the box office. And it’s easy to see why. Hill and Tatum’s chemistry is as electric as ever, the setpieces all land, and Ice Cube steals every scene he’s in. The moment he discovers a secret about Schmidt, then proceeds to blow a gasket while getting served string beans at a buffet, is legit side-splitting. Do yourself a favor this weekend. Enroll in this college comedy and prepare to laugh your rear end off.

Considering the Future of the BBC and Its Funding Model

    September 29, 2026

With viewership of the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) in decline, the country’s Culture Minister must recommend a new funding model for the venerated public institution which will allow the broadcaster to succeed in an increasingly competitive media environment.

Harvard Business School senior lecturer Henry McGee and host Brian Kenny discuss the case, “The Future of the BBC: Public Ownership vs. Privatization,” and the different structures an institution like the BBC could have in order to operate in a financially sound and culturally impactful way.
